My favorite video game is Transformers War for Cybertron(2010). It’s a 3rd person shooter and the story takes place before episode 1 of the original transformers cartoon from the 80’s. The thing about this game, I never saw it as a game. Never wanted to and still don’t. When I think about this game I think of the story. I bought this game, and a Play Station 3 to play it on, for the story. I looked at this game like a short story more than anything else.
The narrative was obviously really important to me. When I found out how much of this game is related to the original Transformers series from the 80s immediately became hooked. Part of the reason was to get to know the characters that don’t really have personalities in the recent films. I was born in 89 so I didn’t grow up with the original transformers but I did my research on them before watching the movies and they seem really interesting. This was my chance to see what they were like (without the 80’s cheesiness) and hopefully this game will make up for what the movies lack. And it does! I got everything I wanted out of this game. The cinematics and dialogue was exactly what I was expecting and in some cases even better.
Honestly I can’t tell what’s better, the story or the gameplay. I don’t play a lot of video games so I have no expectations on what the gameplay should be like. It’s been my experience that I don’t mind what type of game it is as long as I’m playing a character from my favorite movie or cartoon show. Except if it’s an RPG game or whatever they’re called exactly, I’m talking about games like StarCraft and World of WarCraft. In StarCraft, all the characters are so small you can’t even see the detail on them. I used to hate first person shooter games like halo but I’ve gotten a little used to them. I just hate how the characters look really awesome but you can’t even see your own character, just it’s gun. What a waste of an awesome character design.
The story though, really enjoyed it. Seeing the rise of Optimus and how he became a prime is really cool. Honestly I think the story could have been a tad bit more epic but it’s a game. Maybe if it were a short animated movie that’s like straight to DVD, I would have been more satisfied.
I really like this game because of the levels and the characters. Unfortunately I’m not that good at it and keep getting killed easily online, and because of that, It’s probably the only reason I’m not as addicted to it as I would like to be. Plus I’m getting a lot of problems staying connected online with this game which is annoying and has defiantly affected my experience with it. But my lack of skill aside, and if I knew how to properly set up the online connection, this game is truly immersive. I play this on a 42” inch screen with surround sound and it truly is an experience. I recommend this game to any transformers fan that’s a big fan of the original or wants to get to know these characters more.
